Success Story Through our Shower Program

There are moments in community work when something that may seem small from the outside represents an enormous step forward. At TCCC’s Shower Program, our growing team is creating more opportunities to support clients not only with basic needs, but also with the encouragement, relationships, and practical help they need to move forward. For one longtime client, that support recently helped lead to a milestone years in the making. Here’s an update from our Shower and Laundry Manager, Debbie DeGravelles:

We have so many positive things happening in our shower program. One of the biggest improvements has been expanding our team. John joined us as a case manager and has been an incredible addition. We also welcomed Danielle, a client/volunteer through Cal Works. Danielle has a special gift for making everyone feel welcome. She is a friend to everyone and helps create a warm, encouraging environment.

Because of these new team members, we have been able to surround our clients with support in ways we couldn’t before.

One client’s story especially stands out:

R.A. has been living on the streets since he was 10 years old. He left school at that age and has spent most of his life surviving without the support many of us take for granted. Some have even described him as “feral.” He has been using our services for more than five years, and throughout that time we have continued to encourage, support, and believe in him.

Although R.A. is around 40 years old, he had never been able to obtain a state ID. Without identification, many opportunities remained out of reach.

Recently, R.A. began helping our team with setting up and tearing down the shower program each week. Having this responsibility has given him a sense of purpose and helped him feel like a valued part of the Tracy Community Connection Center family.

For years, we encouraged R.A. to get his ID, but he faced many barriers that prevented him from doing so. With the support of our expanded team, we were finally able to help him overcome those obstacles. Our outreach team provided transportation to the DMV, and another client accompanied him so he wouldn’t have to face the process alone.

This week, R.A. received his state ID in the mail.

This simple piece of identification represents so much more than a card. It opens the door to employment, housing, benefits, banking, and many other opportunities that were previously out of reach. We know R.A.‘s journey isn’t over, but this is a major milestone.

We are grateful to celebrate this victory with him and remain committed to walking alongside him as he continues building a brighter future.

R.A.’s new state ID is more than a piece of identification. It represents new possibilities. With his ID in hand, doors to employment, housing, benefits, banking, and other opportunities can begin to open. We know his journey is still unfolding, but we are proud to celebrate this important step and grateful to be able to walk alongside him. As Debbie and the Shower Program team have seen time and again, progress can take time, but patience, persistence, and a community willing to believe in someone can make a meaningful difference.

Success Story: Case Manager Finds Client Alternative Path to Secure Housing

When someone is facing housing instability, the path to a solution isn’t always straightforward. In this case, a client came to TCCC with $5,000 in past-due rent and few options, but instead of simply closing the door when she did not qualify for standard rental assistance, Case Manager Teresa Hopson looked for another way to help.

A client reached out to TCCC facing severe housing instability, burdened by $5,000 in past-due rent. During the initial assessment, the Case Manager thoroughly reviewed the case details and determined that the client did not meet the criteria for standard rental assistance at that time. Facing potential displacement and lacking the financial means to pivot, the client shared that she had been hoping to relocate to Texas to be near her support system of friends and family but felt stuck due to her financial constraints.

Rather than closing the case, the Case Manager actively looked for alternative pathways to help the client achieve long-term stability. Recognizing the client’s openness to relocation, the CM identified that she was eligible for security deposit assistance through her insurance program.

The client quickly gathered and provided her new lease and all necessary verification documents. The CM then took swift action, contacting the new landlord in Texas to secure the required lease agreements and W-9 forms. With all pieces in place, the CM expedited the request through the insurance framework. The application was successfully approved, and the security deposit check was promptly mailed out to the landlord.

Thanks to this coordinated effort, the client expressed immense gratitude for the lifeline. She has successfully secured safe housing and is now able to transition to Texas, giving her the opportunity to rebuild her life surrounded by a strong circle of family and friends.

This story is a reminder that helping someone overcome homelessness or housing instability sometimes means looking beyond the first available solution. By listening to the client’s goals, identifying an alternative source of assistance, and coordinating the details with her new landlord and insurance program, Teresa helped her secure housing in Texas and reconnect with the support system she wanted to be near. For the client, that assistance provided not just a security deposit, but it provided a path forward.

Success Story: Preventing Eviction and Preserving a Family

For families facing a housing crisis, getting help before an eviction happens can make all the difference. TCCC case manager Lissete Frausto recently helped one Tracy mother avoid losing her home after an unexpected change in her family left her struggling to keep up with rent while caring for her nine children. To protect the mother’s identity, we will simply refer to her as “T”.

When T, a devoted single mother of nine children, found herself facing an unexpected separation from her children’s father, she was suddenly left with the responsibility of supporting her family on her own. As she worked to rebuild her life, she began searching for employment while doing everything she could to provide stability for her children.

During this difficult transition, T fell behind on her rent and faced the very real possibility of eviction. Determined to keep a roof over her children’s heads, she reached out to our agency for help.

Through a rental assistance program available to Cash Aid recipients, including rental assistance through HousingWORKs, our office was able to provide the financial support Tianna needed to bring her past-due rent current. This assistance allowed her family to remain safely in their home and prevented the trauma and uncertainty of eviction.

With the immediate housing crisis resolved, T was able to focus on securing employment and continuing to provide for her children without the added burden of losing their home.

T’s story is a powerful reminder of how timely assistance can make a lasting difference. By helping families remain stably housed during times of crisis, we provide more than financial support—we offer hope, stability, and the opportunity for parents and children to move forward with confidence.

T’s story shows why timely rental assistance and compassionate case management are so important. By helping her bring her rent current and remain safely housed, TCCC was able to give this family the stability they needed to focus on what came next: finding employment, caring for her children, and rebuilding their future. Through HousingWORKs and other available resources, TCCC works to connect families with assistance that can prevent a temporary financial crisis from becoming homelessness.

Five Community Success Stories from TCCC

At Tracy Community Connections Center (TCCC), our mission is to walk alongside individuals during some of the most difficult moments of their lives and to help them move forward. The following five stories highlight what’s possible when community, compassion, and perseverance come together. These are real people, facing real challenges and making real progress, though their names have been changed or abbreviated to protect their privacy:

1. Mariana: A Young Mother Reclaims Her Future

Earlier this year, Mariana was referred to the Tracy Shelter by TCCC. A young mother navigating probation and early recovery, she faced major obstacles but remained committed to turning her life around. After a difficult relapse, she entered and completed a 90-day inpatient treatment program, an achievement that required enormous strength and focus.

TCCC provided support throughout her journey, helping her access housing services and reconnect with critical resources. Now living sober, she’s preparing to move to Stockton with her child, where she’ll continue building a stable life. Mariana draws strength from her family, her church, and a growing support network, and she’s determined to keep moving forward.

2. O.D.: Safety and Stability for a Family in Crisis

After escaping domestic violence, O.D. came to us in urgent need of support for herself and her two children. In a matter of days, we helped her access emergency shelter, legal assistance, and essential public benefits including CalWORKS, Medi-Cal, and food assistance.

O.D. is now in a much safer, more stable environment and has begun preparing for her future. With her children in childcare, she’s starting a business program to build a path toward independence and opportunity. In just one month, O.D. went from crisis to control and her courage inspires us daily.

3. A.G.: From Nothing to New Beginnings

A.G. came to TCCC with no belongings, no job, and no clear plan. She had just left an unsafe living situation and was looking for a way to start fresh. We connected her to Tracy House, where she found stability and safety while working with our case managers to plan her next steps.

With steady support, A.G. quickly found a job in Modesto and began rebuilding her life. Today, she’s working, housed, and focused on long-term stability. Her story reminds us that sometimes, all someone needs is a safe place to start again.

4. Ann: Dignity in the Face of Homelessness

At 47, Ann never imagined she would be homeless, let alone for two years. A former businesswoman and mother of three, her life was upended by a divorce and job loss. “I’ve slept in park bathrooms and behind dumpsters,” she shared. “But I won’t let it break me.”

Despite living without shelter, Ann chose to stay sober and help others around her survive. With extensive professional experience, she continues to seek stable employment, though the lack of a permanent address, transportation, and basic hygiene access has made the search nearly impossible. “I had the American Dream once,” she says. “And I still believe I can have it again.” At TCCC, we’re walking with Ann every step of the way as she fights to reclaim that dream.

5. R.A.: From Survival to Serving Others

In 2021, R.A. was living in El Pescadero Park when she first met TCCC staff through our Warming Center. She was struggling with addiction and living in survival mode. But R.A. made a brave choice by entering the City of Tracy shelter and starting treatment. She didn’t stop there. While staying at the shelter, she completed her medical assistant certification and commuted to Stockton three days a week for her internship.

Today, she’s working part-time at San Joaquin General Hospital, using her experience and training to care for others. R.A.’s journey is proof that with the right support, people can not only recover, but thrive.
